The third annual Fun Day was held in Bury Knowle Park on the
afternoon of Saturday 19th July 2008. This is the annual gift from the
local churches to the Headington community.
The sun shone, and around 1400 people came and enjoyed the free fun
and refreshments.
Thanks to all who worked so hard to make the afternoon a success,
and especially to Oxford City Council for its generous support and to
the local sponsors:
A-Z Household Goods, Cafe Noir, Clovers, Connell Estate Agents, the
Headington Co-op, the Copacabana Cafe, Daisy Chain, Domino's Pizza,
Frog Orange, Gardiner's Opticians, Headington Homewares, La
Croissanterie, Leopard Press, Oxford Design and Photographic, the
Queen's Bakery, Pen to Paper, the Royal Standard, and Scott Fraser Ltd.
The 2008 AGM was well-attended, and following a keynote address by
Rt.Revd. John Pritchard, Bishop of Oxford, there was lively
discussion of how we could take forward ecumenical work in
Headington. Read the formal reports by the Chair on Churches Together's activities
in the year, and a summary of the
Bishop's talk and the
discussion that followed.
Read two talks given to Churches Together In Headington in Lent 2007 by Revd. Canon Hugh Wybrew and Bridget Walker of the Society of Friends and the sermon preached at All Saints, Highfield as part of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity by Richard Finn OP, head of house at Blackfriars, Oxford.
This year the churches in Headington met almost every day during the
Week of Prayer for Christian Unity for worship reflecting the styles of
the individual churches. On the first Friday there were ecumenical
prayers at the Priory, Old High Street. Saturday morning saw prayers at
Corpus Christi Catholic church, and on Sunday afternoon there was a
festal Evensong at All Saints' with a memorable sermon by Richard Finn
OP as guest preacher. Monday was a rest day, and we resumed on Tuesday
with evening fellowship at
On the morning of Saturday 15 March 2008 over 100
people representing
most of the local congregations assembled at All Saints' Church, Lime
Walk, where the Vicar, the Rev. James Cocke, said a prayer. Carrying
branches of greenery, and singing songs appropriate to the season, they
processed up Hew High Street, through the subway, and along
In the park Headington Baptist Church (Rev. James Bloice Smith) hosted
a half-hour service with prayers by the Rev. Dick Woolf (Collinwood
URC) and the Rev. Jonathan Sewell (St Mary's Barton), a dramatic
reading from the Street Bible account of the Entry into Jerusalem
delivered by Susie Stead and others from Holy Trinity, Headington
Quarry, and a vivid presentation of the message of the cross by the
Rev. David Bartrip (Cornerstone Christian Centre).
The service was followed by refreshments provided by HBC. The sun shone
on the proceedings, in defiance of the gloomy weather forecast.
This was the second event (following on the Week of Prayer above) in
Headington's participation in Hope
2008.
The play written by
Helen Foster began with the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost and
subsequent episodes involving St Peter drawn from the Acts of the
Apostles. It went on to trace the main events of Jesus's life, death,
and resurrection in a series of flashbacks as Peter recalled them to
John Mark. The large cast was drawn from a wide range of congregations.
