Headington Summer Funday 2013

What have sumo wrestling, contemplation and flapjacks got in common? They have all featured in the Headingon Summer Funday in recent years! This annual event in Bury Knowle Park is organised by Churches Together in Headington as a gift to the local community. Headington has always had a strong sense of community, and even today, despite being bigger than ever, opportunities to gather together are welcomed enthusiastically. Around 1500 people turn out for the Headington Summer Funday, and despite the 'Summer' part being rather hit-and-miss in recent years, with gale force winds and torrential downpours, 'Fun' has been always to the fore!

Last year the Funday had a new, more central position in the park, with a circus-like entrance to draw people in.  It was a wonderful sight watching everyone arrive in their droves. The weather was perfect too, so there were no flyaway gazebos or impromptu swimming pools appearing!

The afternoon itself was a whirlwind of smiles and organised chaos. Around the central activities and games there were many other attractions including balloon modelling, biscuit decorating and bouncy castles.  Teenagers did a fantastic job painting the faces of the young and old.  There were also more relaxing areas, with free hot drinks and cakes aplenty to be sampled as well as a free barbeque offering burgers and hotdogs throughout the afternoon. New in 2012 was a contemplation tent, with imagery provided by the Catholic church, and a junk modelling area where people created an Olympic themed scene using an array of cast-off items sourced from Orinoco’s scrapstore.

It is important to recognise the scores of people who stepped forward to volunteer to run the day, doing absolutely everything, from cooking burgers to assembling gazebos. Planning is well underway for the Headington Summer Funday 2013, so please put the date Saturday 20th July  in your diary now and come and join us between 2pm and 5pm in Bury Knowle Park for another celebration of our Headington community.

Planned activities include the favourites of bouncy castles, face painting, sumo wrestling, not to mention the tea tent and the barbecue. New for this year will be a pamper area where you can get henna tattoos, hairbraiding and nails.

If you are able to help in anyway please contact Emma Steane, or call 01865 763572.
